The work
Create realistic technical scenarios and problem sets in optics, photonics, electromagnetics, RF, or communications. Write expert reference solutions and grading rubrics, then assess submitted solutions for correctness, depth, and sound technical judgment.
- Use practical modeling knowledge to identify strong, incomplete, or incorrect solutions.
- Work remotely on a project basis with an asynchronous schedule.
What it pays and what you need
- Pay: $100 per hour.
- Time: 20+ hours per week.
- Location: Remote; open to candidates in eligible countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.
- Language: Professional fluency in English.
- Experience: At least one year of hands-on modeling of optical, photonic, electromagnetic, RF, or communications systems, plus current or recent hands-on activity in the field.
- Education: A bachelor's, master's, or PhD in a relevant area.
- Tools: Working proficiency with a relevant simulation tool, such as Lumerical, Zemax, Code V, RSoft, COMSOL, Ansys HFSS, CST, Meep, or Tidy3D.
- You should be comfortable working independently in a remote, asynchronous setting.
Helpful experience
Experience evaluating, peer reviewing, code reviewing, grading, or editing technical work is useful. Background in integrated photonics and PIC design, metasurfaces and nanophotonics, antenna and RF systems, fiber optic communications, or DSP and wireless PHY can also strengthen your fit.

About AI training work
OpenTrain is a platform where people can find AI training projects and build a profile for their work. AI training is the human work of preparing and assessing examples for AI models; specialists are paid to apply their field knowledge to tasks such as judging technical answers.
