The Work
You will review technical materials and inspection decisions used to train AI systems for advanced manufacturing and materials engineering. Your work will combine metallurgical judgment, welding inspection, standards-based evaluation, and clear written and verbal explanations.
- Evaluate metallographic microstructures and decide whether materials meet acceptance and conformance requirements.
- Review heat treatment processes and acceptance evidence using AMS 2750, ASTM E112, and related US specifications.
- Assess weld quality through macro etch evaluation and apply Certified Welding Inspector acceptance criteria to case studies.
- Review industrial coating inspection evidence against NACE/AMPP and SSPC protocols.
- Identify and disposition defects in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing builds using build and cross-sectional data.
- Document accept or reject decisions with clear technical reasoning.
- Apply NADCAP, AWS, ASTM, AMS, NACE/AMPP, and SSPC standards across samples, weldments, coatings, and additive manufacturing builds.
What It Pays and Takes
This is a remote, part-time contractor role. US-based professionals are preferred, and the role is open to candidates in the countries specified for the project.
- Pay: $40 to $60 USD per hour.
- Time: Less than 20 hours per week.
- Language: Professional fluency in English.
- Experience: At least eight years making accept or reject decisions involving micrographs, weld macros, fracture surfaces, coatings, or laser powder bed fusion additive builds.
- Advanced knowledge of ASTM, AMS, AWS, NADCAP, NACE/AMPP, and SSPC standards.
- Proven experience in metallographic analysis, heat treatment evaluation, weld inspection, and industrial coating assessment.
- Strong technical writing, verbal communication, attention to detail, and the ability to explain inspection reasoning clearly.
- Helpful background: Current or prior AWS Certified Welding Inspector credentials or an equivalent metallurgical certification.
- Useful additional experience includes laser powder bed fusion processes, additive manufacturing defect mechanisms, digital collaboration, and independent delivery management.
How it works
You apply here in about two minutes and finish on the hiring platform. The next step is a short AI interview (technical roles include a coding challenge). Passing it is how you qualify for paid tasks, so take it soon after you are invited.
About AI Training Work
AI training work is the human side of building artificial intelligence: specialists review examples, label data, and explain which answers or decisions meet the required standard. People with deep technical experience are needed when the work involves specialized judgment, inspection rules, and industry standards.
OpenTrain is where people discover AI training and data-labeling projects, build a profile, and start applications in one place.
