The work
You will help improve AI systems by creating realistic mechanical engineering problems and reviewing their technical answers. Your evaluations will focus on whether the work is accurate, practical, manufacturable, defensible, and aligned with engineering standards.
- Create expert-level problems based on manufactured, tested, or approved parts, assemblies, and analyses.
- Review AI-generated responses for technical accuracy, manufacturability, practical feasibility, and sound engineering practice.
- Evaluate models, drawings, tolerances, calculations, and finite element analysis results for correctness and defensibility.
- Decide whether technical work is clear and robust enough for another reviewer to dimension against.
- Write structured feedback that identifies errors and explains how the work could improve.
What it pays and takes
This is flexible, part-time contract work that can be completed remotely alongside employment or studies. The role is open to candidates based in the United States.
- Pay: $100 per hour for qualifying work.
- Time: 20+ hours per week.
- Schedule: Flexible, with no set schedule.
- Location: United States.
- Language: Professional fluency in English.
- Experience: Hands-on work as a mechanical engineer or engineering student on projects that were manufactured, tested, or approved.
- Education: BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
- Technical depth in parametric solid modeling built to tolerance, GD&T drawing interpretation, standards-based calculations, or FEA validated against hand calculations.
- Strong written communication, close attention to detail, and the ability to explain complex mechanical engineering concepts clearly.
- Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment.
- Helpful tools and experience include SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor, Fusion 360, ANSYS, Abaqus, Nastran, MATLAB, or comparable software.
- Experience creating manufacturing-ready drawings or models for machining, sheet metal, casting, injection molding, or additive manufacturing is useful.
- Background with a manufacturer, product design firm, aerospace or defense contractor, automotive supplier, or advanced mechanical engineering studies can support success.

About AI training work
AI training is the human work behind systems that learn from examples, including reviewing model answers and writing better examples. Mechanical engineering experts are needed when AI must understand technical drawings, calculations, manufacturing limits, and real engineering practice. OpenTrain helps people find these roles, build a profile, and apply in one place.
