The work
You will turn computational engineering research you have personally implemented, run, and debugged into research-grade evaluation tasks for AI models. Tasks may use finite-element, fluid-dynamics, reaction-engineering, physiological, structural, electromagnetic, aerospace, or related computational methods.
Each task includes a main problem, connected subproblems, a Python reference solution, and tests that verify the results. You will define standards for judging solutions, explain modeling choices, validate numerical results, revise work after structured review, and optionally review tasks from other experts.
- Design original evaluation tasks based on your own computational research.
- Write Python reference solutions and tests for engineering problems.
- Set meaningful metrics for evaluating scientific reasoning and technical results.
- Revise tasks in response to structured review feedback.
- Optionally review and calibrate tasks submitted by other engineering experts.
What it pays and takes
This is flexible, remote, independent-contractor work with no fixed weekly schedule. You should be able to work independently and turn real computational research into clear, testable tasks.
- $200 per approved task.
- Each task takes about two hours.
- Remote work with no fixed weekly schedule.
- Open to candidates in the countries listed for this role.
- Fluent English is required.
- Research-track bachelor's study or research experience, master's or PhD study, postdoctoral work, or a recent engineering degree with a computational focus.
- Relevant backgrounds include mechanical, aerospace, chemical, biomedical, civil, environmental, or electrical engineering.
- Hands-on experience writing your own code, preferably in Python, to implement or validate engineering models and numerical solvers.
- Ability to explain computational modeling choices, validate numerical results, and create reference solutions and tests.
- You must be able to work as an independent contractor without visa sponsorship. F-1 students, including OPT and CPT participants, are not eligible.
- Experience with finite-element methods, CFD, numerical solvers, public code, a thesis, or papers showing computational work is useful.
- Experience with data annotation, data labeling, AI, or machine-learning evaluation is helpful.

About AI training work
AI training is the human work behind systems that learn from examples, including writing, testing, and evaluating model outputs. OpenTrain is a platform where people find these projects, build a profile, and apply; specialist contributors are paid for the technical knowledge they bring to difficult tasks.
