The work
You will work with biological datasets and apply machine learning to bioinformatics research. Your work may support variant calling, gene expression analysis, pathway modeling, and other biological applications.
You will also build reproducible analysis pipelines, explain your methods clearly, and document model assumptions and technical decisions.
- Apply supervised and unsupervised learning to genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and multi-omics data.
- Build, train, and evaluate machine learning models for bioinformatics applications.
- Design and improve scalable pipelines that include machine learning components.
- Document methods, assumptions, and technical approaches so the work can be reproduced.
- Use standard bioinformatics tools such as GATK, STAR, DESeq2, Nextflow, Snakemake, or similar tools.
What it pays and takes
This is an expert-level, part-time contractor role for someone who can work independently on technical research tasks. The role is open to candidates in the countries listed for this opportunity.
- Pay: $175 per hour.
- Time: 20 or more hours per week.
- Language: Professional fluency in English.
- Education: A master's degree or PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, data science, or a related quantitative field.
- Research: At least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Experience: Demonstrated expertise in both machine learning and bioinformatics, including areas such as sequence analysis, genomics, transcriptomics, or related biological data.
- Skills: Strong problem-solving ability and the ability to work independently on technical tasks.
Helpful background
Experience teaching or assisting with bioinformatics, machine learning, or computational biology courses is useful. Familiarity with biological foundation models or large-scale omics machine learning frameworks is also helpful.
- Experience with tools such as GATK, STAR, DESeq2, Nextflow, or Snakemake.
- Familiarity with scVI, DNABERT, Enformer, or similar omics machine learning frameworks.
- Background as a teaching assistant or instructor for bioinformatics, machine learning, or computational biology.
